The Lighting Department has to make sure that the look and fell of the images captured on the screen is perfect. For that purpose, they set up a wide range of equipment to achieve different moods, atmospheres and effects, as well as helping to make the actor look right for their roles.
All members of this department are trained to work safely with electricity and all its potential dangers. Lighting has become increasingly sophisticated and several lamps and accessories can create special effects. The sheer variety of equipment means that Lighting Technicians may take up specialist roles within the team once trained.
Members of the Lighting crew must be qualified electricians and generally acquire their skills through a combination of on-the-job experience and college training. All occupations in the department require Health and Safety knowledge, excellent expertise in the area, numeracy and IT skills (to operate more complex equipment) and the ability to work comfortably at heights.
